THE MOMENT: 美成年 BOUNCE by Kim Woojin

I know a lot of kids who think adults are an entirely different species. When I was younger, I always thought that growing up meant becoming a monotone all-business shell with no personality. Maybe that's the case for some people (I hope not), but South Korean soloist Kim Woojin sees things differently. In his newest album, "THE MOMENT: 美成年 BOUNCE", released on August 30, Woojin sings about coming into a lively adulthood. In the description under the album's title track on YouTube, it's explained, "This album expresses the positive and dynamic energy with coming of age, with many different emotions." This much is clear from the music video, which shows colorful and happy scenes of Woojin singing, dancing, and playing various instruments.

The title track, "On My Way", opens the album on a bright note, with the lines: "I'm on my way./Gonna run at my pace,/A little clumsy but be ok,/Just as I am now, this moment forever young./Oh yeah I'll run 'til I run out of breath,/A little lost but be ok./I might be silly but/I'm still on my way to dream." The song is about overcoming doubts, growing, and enjoying your life while not bending to outside pressure.

The second track on the album, "Song of Icarus", further explores the concept of going forward towards dreams. The song starts slow and quiet, the beat building up to a light and airy chorus. Following this song, "Telepathy" is a smooth and bright track about falling in love and experiencing a strong connection with somebody. Next on the album, "Drive Away" expresses the desire to drive away from the worries of life with a soft, peaceful melody. After this song comes "Tryin'", which takes a unique turn. "Tryin'" is a light-sounding song with a fun vibe about trying to get over someone even as their memories stay. The last song on the album, "Say Something to Me", is a sentimental song about asking for honesty and comfort from someone.

Through the six tracks on "THE MOMENT: 美成年 BOUNCE", Woojin sings about genuine feelings that can be felt through the flow of each song. The album covers topics of individuality, dreams, love, escape, trying, and honesty. These are all concepts that many young adults know well. Through his second album, Woojin paints a picture of the joy and pain of adulthood.

Our Lost Summer

With the outbreak of the coronavirus in 2020 and the resulting stay at home order, life screeched to a stop for many people around the globe. Amid this chaos, Tomorrow X Together released their album, Minisode 1: Blue Hour. “We Lost the Summer” is a song on the album about the pandemic and everything that was halted during quarantine. Two years later, in the summer of 2022, the group finally held their first world tour, which was delayed along with so many other events. “Our Lost Summer”, a new documentary on Disney+, records this meaningful time.      Viewers will enjoy the aesthetics of the documentary. Those who’ve been following TXT for a while might recognize editing styles from “One Dream”, the group’s reality show filmed during their first showcase in the U.S. in 2019, as well as from the Minisode 1 album. The parallels to “One Dream” serve as a throwback to TXT’s rookie days, comparing the showcase and the world tour as two different beginnings for the group and t...

IU Wins Hearts With Masterful Lyricism in The Winning (Review)

There's certain music that you can only fully appreciate when you understand the lyrics, and The Winning by South Korean soloist IU certainly falls into this category. Hear me out: as someone who doesn’t speak Korean, I did enjoy the mini album on my first listen. The music had a calming effect, IU’s angelic vocals paired with smooth instrumentals. It wasn't until I read the lyrical translations on Genius.com, however, that tears came to my eyes from the sheer beauty of the album. Through the lyrics and sounds in The Winning, IU weaves a story of life and success, and all that lies in between. The Winning begins with “Shopper”–a song that probably brings out the stereotypical teenage girl in all of us and the desire to “shop all day.” The chorus sounds distinctly airy and light, almost dreamy. While the soloist could simply be singing about a particularly large shopping spree, the lyrics also contain a metaphor. The lines “Time is short/ Make ‘em all yours,” from the ch...

5 Years of TXT; a Look into the Music that Led to This Dream Week

On March 3, 2019, Tomorrow X Together made their debut with the title track, “Crown” off of their first EP, The Dream Chapter: Star. The second boy group under BigHit Entertainment, the debut was met with excitement, though the five members were largely viewed as BTS’s younger brothers. There were advantages and disadvantages to the title, but one thing was clear; TXT had some high expectations to live up to. Five years later, the group has just wrapped up anniversary celebrations with their loyal fanbase, Moa. The release of their tenth album, Minisode 3: Tomorrow, is just over the horizon. Tomorrow X Together has officially made a name for themselves, changing millions of lives for the better. The group’s current discography comprises nine albums. The Dream Chapter: Star, featuring Blue Orangeade, Crown, Our Summer, Cat & Dog, and Nap of a Star, begins the group’s story, with themes of embracing differences and finding people who make you feel safe. The Dream Chapter: Magic...
