Screw Loose by Hannah Grae

I can’t be the only person who wrote dramatic poems recording my confusing feelings as a new teenager trying to figure out the world. I couldn’t have been the only one wondering “Am I insane?” when I hit fourteen. Sometimes I still wonder the same thing, and I’m sure some of you do, too. I don’t know if Welsh singer-songwriter Hannah Grae ever wrote the type of poems that I did when she was younger, but her newest release reminds me of those same emotions.

A quick glance at the lyrics proves that “Screw Loose” is the perfect track to let out all of your inner angst to. Lines like “Nobody here seems to care, don't they see?/Am I the only one? Is it just me?” express loneliness and frustration. These feelings seem to drive Hannah to insanity through the chorus of the song, where she passionately sings, “Well, I think that I'm screw loose.” The content of the lyrics is both hurt and angry, however, a glimmer of hope appears in the second verse: “I'm hopin' I can turn all that hate into art.”

Sometimes it’s necessary to feel negative emotions, even to embrace them for a time. The best thing you can do with a feeling is make something out of it, whether that something is one of my teenage angst-poems or a true work of art like Hannah has created in “Screw Loose.” The singer confirmed in her e-newsletter that the song was written during a difficult time, when she was struggling to reconcile her music career to everything she’d dreamed it to be.

Although emotions can be painful, they aren’t going to go away, and Hannah believes that this is actually a good thing. In her newsletter, she delivers this important message: “No matter what you’re doing in life, there will always be something. There will always be a challenge. Whether that’s heartbreak, grief, loneliness and all that’s in between, achieving something won’t shield you from the bad parts of life. I’m learning that that’s okay. It’s actually incredible.” Hannah’s message is that life will continually try to throw obstacles at us, but it just means that there will always be more opportunities to grow. Sometimes it’s ok to go crazy. We all have a screw loose sometimes, and that’s just another part of life.

On the surface, “Screw Loose” is about losing your mind. Underneath that, it’s a song about hope, about facing the difficulties in life. Musically, it’s exactly what a song with this subject should be. The sound is edgy and intense. The beginning of the chorus sounds both angry and anguished, while in the second half the words roll together more smoothly but with the same frustration behind them. The chorus before the bridge ends on a note that lasts far longer than anyone would expect. Despite the almost grungy sound, “Screw Loose” is also energetic and, in the end, it’s really a fun song to hear.

With “Screw Loose”, Hannah Grae has turned negative emotions into something beautiful. By doing this, she’s given listeners a place of understanding and acceptance as well as hope, and a catchy melody to encompass it all.

Our Lost Summer

With the outbreak of the coronavirus in 2020 and the resulting stay at home order, life screeched to a stop for many people around the globe. Amid this chaos, Tomorrow X Together released their album, Minisode 1: Blue Hour. “We Lost the Summer” is a song on the album about the pandemic and everything that was halted during quarantine. Two years later, in the summer of 2022, the group finally held their first world tour, which was delayed along with so many other events. “Our Lost Summer”, a new documentary on Disney+, records this meaningful time.      Viewers will enjoy the aesthetics of the documentary. Those who’ve been following TXT for a while might recognize editing styles from “One Dream”, the group’s reality show filmed during their first showcase in the U.S. in 2019, as well as from the Minisode 1 album. The parallels to “One Dream” serve as a throwback to TXT’s rookie days, comparing the showcase and the world tour as two different beginnings for the group and t...

Orange Blood by Enhypen

On November 17, 2023, Enhypen released “Orange Blood” after teasing the album with special album sleeves during their second world tour: Fate. The sleeves only included part of the album's title: “______Blood.” Fans made guesses about what the first word could be, and “orange” certainly didn’t cross many minds. Still, the strange title is fitting for the 7-track album, which is softer than much of Enhypen’s previous work, but still carries the group’s unique flavor. “Orange Blood” is an aesthetically and musically beautiful ode to love. “Mortal” opens the album with a magical instrumental and Jungwon’s voice, not singing yet, but speaking in a tone that seems to come straight out of a movie trailer. The members trade lines, alternating impressively between Korean, English, and Japanese, until they break into song just under a minute in. The chorus carries the emotionally impactful melody to it’s peak before dying back down into dramatic speech for the second verse. This beautiful...

Dual

What’s one concept that drives the world? What keeps everything going? There are billions of words any reader out there could be thinking of right now. “Passion.” “Love.” “Hope.” “Determination.” “Coffee.” You get the idea. If I asked a million people to give me one word, I guarantee there would be almost as many answers, and some would probably contradict each other directly. Why? There’s one word I can think of, and it must’ve been on indie Korean band The Rose’s mind this past October, too. This isn’t the best or the only word to describe the world, but it’s one that brings harmony to all of the other words: balance. You can’t have just fire or just water, light won’t exist in the absence of darkness, and day means nothing without night. Balance is the key theme in The Rose’s October release, “Dual”. The album is artfully divided into two sections by short interludes. The introduction to the album, “Dawn” starts off barely audible, chirping birds softly transferring into a...
